Visit the Algarve this winter

A seaside holiday has to be taken in summer, right? Wrong. The Algarve in Portugal, the destination of choice for thousands of holidaymakers during July and August, fortunately has plenty to offer its winter visitors, too. Arrange a stay in one of the many luxurious villas and enjoy the absence of overcrowding and constant noise; for a significantly cheaper price.
The winter season in the Algarve, which runs from December through to March, is both short and mild. The region, by virtue of being in the far south of Portugal, boasts the best climate in the country at this time of year. While northern areas of Portugal shiver in cooler temperatures, in the Algarve the sun beds await as even the lowest temperatures settle at around 15 degrees C, while the appearance of rain is so rare it's barely considered.
Though the water may be too cold for some, it is still easy to enjoy a day at the beach doing activities in the Algarve, as elsewhere in Europe people rail against the cold. Chilly winds from the north are broken by the cliffs, leaving you free to top up your tan at the most unlikely time of year. The staggering rock formations and secret coves spread along the coastline amaze all year round. Should you take the plunge, you can expect to be rewarded with some incredible snorkelling sights.
Alternatively, spend the day enjoying progressively breathtaking views on a gentle hike. The conditions are perfect for all types of walker, from the gentle strollers to those searching for something a little more exerting. The coastal estuaries are also a haven for keen birdwatchers.
Luxury villas Algarve style provide the perfect base for your winter sun-seeking mission. The capital city of the area, Faro, is both easy to get to and navigate around. Home to a wide range of shops, entertainment and multicultural organisations, there is always something to do, see or try. The special market days are a real treat. Usually taking place monthly, check the local tourist office to see when you can experience the hustle and bustle of a busy Faro market and pick up a bargain or two.
The generally quieter winter months provide the perfect opportunity for some high-quality sightseeing and are the perfect time to explore some of the many historical buildings in the area. Famed in part for its collection of old churches, the Algarve appeals to historical and architectural enthusiasts alike. The ancient cathedral and sandstone castle in Silves, for example, make for a stunning morning or afternoon of exploring.
The many efficient transport links in the area mean a number of day trips are an attractive proposition. A fast train service to Lisbon adds a city of rich diversity to your holiday, whereas no border control means Spain is also within easy reach.
Nightlife in the Algarve remains vibrant all year round. The number of bars and nightclubs in Faro, as well as neighbouring towns, will keep the most committed night-owl busy, while the food is unrivalled.
No mention of the Algarve, though, is complete without bringing up the golf. With famously beautiful courses, including 20 world-class ones, and the famously mild climate, you could play again and again and all year round. In further good news for the sports fan, the Algarve also boasts a number of top-quality tennis courts.
Whether you want relaxation, varied activities or a mixture of the two, the Algarve has something for everyone. So, swap your coats for t-shirts, thick pyjamas for shorts and woolly hat and scarf for flip flops and get some sun on your back this winter.
